5th Graders Attend Secrets of Service Workshop

by Mrs. Brenda Hegemann

The 5th graders of Howells-Dodge Consolidated School attended the Secrets of Service Workshop held at the Lifelong Learning Center in Norfolk, NE, on Tuesday, March 14, 2017. This program was presented by the 4-H Council and the University of Nebraska Extension Northeast Research and Extension Centers. Northeast Community College was also a sponsor.

The students were given the opportunity to take part in an entrepreneurship activity. They were divided into teams that had to plan and set up a pencil business. The students were given specific roles they each had to fulfill. At the conclusion of the activity, the students determined if they generated a profit or a loss by keeping accurate records of their income, expenses, and inventory.

This is what each of the students had to about this experience:

Addie - I learned there is more to running a business than I thought. I loved getting to sell the pencils and working as a cashier.

Connor - My favorite part about the workshop was buying and selling the pencils. I learned that it is hard work to start a business, and it is not for everyone.

Preston - My favorite part of the workshop was buying pencils because I had to budget the money I had. I also learned that when you run a business, you have to do a lot of math.

Pheobe - My favorite part was when we got to watch the television commercials that some of the kids created because they were funny. I learned that I need to save money because I almost ran out of my salary.

Landon - My favorite part of the day was when I was peddling pencils with my peddler’s license. I learned about ways of selling something at a reasonable price without losing money.

Liliana - My favorite part of the workshop was when I got to be cashier for our pencil store. I learned that you cannot force anyone to buy your product, or they may not come back.
