Howells-Dodge-Clarkson Members Attend District 5 Leadership Conference

The District 5 FCCLA Leadership Conference was held on Monday, October 22 at CCC in Columbus.  Seventy-seven members from the Howells-Dodge-Clarkson FCCLA Chapter attended.  The morning began with rolls and juice served by the St. Edward Chapter.  A welcome was given by Lisa Brestel of CCC.  These District Officers were installed by the Boone Central Chapter:  President - Kelley Robinson, High Plains; Vice President - Megan Schrant, Humphrey; Secretary - Shayla Shanle, St. Edward; Historian - Makenzie Polacek, Howells-Dodge-Clarkson; Vice President of Peer Education - Tyra Reardon, St. Edward; Vice President of STAR - Darienne Pokorny, Newman Grove; Vice President of Public Relations - Taylor Zitek, East Butler; Vice President of Outreach - Allyson Melcher, Twin River; Vice President of Installation - Roxanne Reiners, Boone Central; Vice President of National Programs - Isaiah Miller, Leigh; Vice President of Recreation - Sabra Moore, David City; and Parliamentarian - Nixtel Ortiz, Schuyler.  A mixer was led by the East Butler Chapter.  The keynote speaker was JoAnne Owens-Nausler who spoke on "Be A Possibilitarian."  State Officer Candidates Alex Cumming and Alicia Hamling of St. Edward gave their speeches to the group.  Members enjoyed a Zumba session led by the Columbus YMCA and lunch served by CCC.  

Afternoon sessions included "Share Our Strength" by State Officer Shelby Stultz, "Peer Teams" by Alicia Hamling and Alex Cumming,   "The Dangers of Sexting" by Bill Price of the Nebraska State Patrol, "Alcohol Abuse" by the East Central Health Dept., "Self Defense" by the Columbus YMCA, "Defy the Lie. Fight Big Tobacco" by Amanda Mortensen, and "7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" by Lisa Kaslon.  Chapters brought food donations and the bucket raffle conducted by the Howells-Dodge-Clarkson Chapter raised $300 to donate to the Columbus Food Bank.  

During the closing awards session, Vanessa Hegemann was honored for placing first in the Jr. Creed Speaking Contest.  Morgan Baumert placed 3rd and Nathan Bazata earned a blue ribbon in the Senior Creed Speaking Contest.  The Howells-Dodge-Clarkson Chapter received first place in the National Programs Poster Contest, tied for first place in the Promoting FCCLA Poster Contest, and placed third in the Conference Theme Poster Contest.
